Palo santo, commonly referring to Bursera graveolens, has a documented history of ceremonial incense use in Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia. Sandalwood has its own longstanding role in Indian ritual and perfumery.
Tradition & meaning
Some South American practices associate palo santo with spiritual cleansing. This is a cultural belief, not scientific proof of removing negative energy or pollutants. The two traditions deserve to be understood on their own terms.
